Sagunto in Spain Looks to Its Namesake

Jeanette on Oct 24th 2009

Not many people in Sagunto, Spain, nor in Sagunto, Philippines, knew that their town had a namesake all the way across the ocean. This was an exciting revelation that Senor Jose Ramblas wrote an article about this coincidence in Levante, a publication in Valencia, Spain. He shared with us what he had written but I hadn’t posted it here yet because I wanted to translate it first. If you’d like to read the Spanish version, you can access the file by clicking this link: filipinas.

When Senor Ramblas heard of the recent storms that hit the region and saw some of the devastation posted here and on the Sison website, he wrote another article about the devastation. Below is the article and my rough translation. Forgive any errors, but you get the idea. Click on the photo below to read the article in Spanish.

Donations Needed for Halloween in Sagunto

Jeanette on Oct 24th 2009

It is a long standing tradition for Sagunto to host the annual Halloween celebration. This is a project by the young people for the young people of Sagunto. This year, understandably, the funds for this event is lacking. Our young leaders, SK Chairwoman Ellaine and SK Kagawad Gemillaine sent an appeal for donations so they can still hold a reduced version of previous celebrations. This year, they have decided to forego the basketball tournament and will simply hold a costume contest.

They acknowledge that this event is not a priority but it would be a great morale booster especially for the young people whose families were affected by the storms. Proceeding with the Halloween/All-Saints-Day celebration will be a step in going forward with the recovery process; a sign that life will go on as before even as residents rebuild what the storm destroyed. Sustainable Relief - Fund a Farm, Feed a Family

Jeanette on Oct 21st 2009

Sison braces for another typhoon, predicted to race through the region today, dumping more rain on the already drenched landscape. Pray for our town, our family and friends. While the storm pass through, they will need our help more than ever.

The video below was produced by the Mayor’s office to appeal to the citizens of Sison, wherever you are, to please help your townmates, family and friends. The farmers of Sison were especially hard hit. The crops that they had cultivated this year, including rice that was almost ready for harvest and vegetables slated for upscale markets and the new pasalubong center were all wiped out by Typhoon Pepeng. They will not be able to recover their loses on their own. The Congressman and the Mayor are lobbying the government earnestly for relief, but more help is needed; especially help that is earmarked specifically for the farmers. 1,200 PHP can fund the rehabilitation of one hectare of farm land. Send what you can for every little bit helps.
