Sison Woodcrafts

December 15th, 20083 Comments

Mayor Kimi and Congressman Mark O. Cojuangco continue to lend their support to their constituents by encouraging them to hone their crafts in order to create more successful businesses for themselves and for the town as a whole. There are many talented craftspeople in Sison, most notably the woodcarvers and furniture makers who set up shops along the highway from Agat to Poblacion Central.

According to the official Sison Website, the Congressman has allocated funds to assist these fine craftspeople to help with their expense in starting or improving their business. In addition to the financial aid, plans are also being considered to assign a section of the official website to advertise these businesses, making it easier for customers to find them.

To all Sisonians abroad who are going home for the holidays, don’t forget to patronize the talented and hardworking craftsmen and women in our hometown when considering your souvenir purchases.

I like these items too! How do we train more people to acquire wood-carving and weaving skills? Actually, I miss the artisans and craft workers of Artacho. They used to make export-quality wood carvings. Do you still remember those pair-craft decors? Saguntonians used to be known as basket and kuribot weavers, and rope makers as well. Along the Agat-Artacho strip of McArthur Highway, lots of our native people and locals earn a living through this woodcraft business. Furniture makers also rely on this trade no matter how depleted our forests are, and small the parking space is. Could we think of widening that Agat area extending to the Bued river to create a showcase of our locals’ craftmaship, and allowing tourists more space to park in…All these would usher to better revenues for our town, eh? Let us also remember that the materials needed for these crafts are WOOD and TREES that we value the most. These days, you’d see craft makers and the DENR chasing each other about tree-cutting, etc. SIGH. Let us keep with the regulations, and be more friendly to crafters at the same time protecting our environment. Hey, this plastic material substitute could be the solution to this eco problem.
