Typhoon Halong Damaged Properties
OMom on May 19th 2008

“Pangasinan’s Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council has confirmed six fatalities. Two children were missing after reportedly drowning in a river in Dagupan City. Aside from Dagupan, 23 other towns and cities in the province were affected by the typhoon.”
Local Sagunto eyewitness stated that he has never seen a storm as powerful as the one that passed last Saturday. It has left a lot of property damage, especially roofs made from galvanized iron that simply flew. It is reported that our local Captain Esteban’s home was badly damaged where the entire roof came off and landed close to the Pascua compound. Many others suffered similar damage to their homes. In addition to property damages, trees, crops and agricultural produce were also lost or damaged by Typhoon Halong.
The storm weakened as it passed the northern part of Philippines and is currently making its way towards Okinawa, Japan where it is predicted to make landfall early Tuesday.

Yes, that typhoon has just passed us (early today, Tuesday) in Japan and good that it is not as strong as it was in Pangasinan. The kids managed to go to school this morning (as you know, they seldom cancel classes here even if there are storms) . I was watching GMA news online last night and couldn’t do much but pray that our people recover soon. The Phil. news warned that the prices of bread may go up due to electricity, oil and flour price hikes. Rice prices could skyrocket as well…watch out for hoarders there, folks. Go back to the basics now that electricity is feared cut for a month or so. Now where are the “talaksan” and firewood you can use? Gone , all gone due to charcoal making right? It’s time to replace all those we have cut and wasted. We’ll see if we could organize relief efforts here. Could somebody take photos of sample damages there? What things are needed most? I wish some barangay officials post a few comments here so we’d know what to do or organize. My clan members out there, themselves are confused which damages to start with. I wish that there’s not much clothing and food shortage happening. If there are needs like these, could some orgs start a relief pile at abong today? I heard lots of plywood and posts would be needed to restore what’s destroyed. How do we help, guys?

Is Cosme, the other name for Halong? Itong si halong, halang talaga oo. Uray pay kano La union and Baguio, flooded. Now how could Baguio be flooded? Zambales, Pangasinan, La Union, Baguio and Benguet, all devastated! Grrr! But hey Bago brothers, Igorot, Zambals and Ilocanos, all, let us join hands to revive our lands again. We can do it in a few weeks’ time. Your relatives abroad will surely extend their help in any kind. Okay, I’m gonna vist Sison site and read if they have some updates.

Yep, someone else asked about helping our people in the Philippines. We definitely could start some kind of relief effort. Like you said, Emz, we need to have someone from the barangay council to let us know what are the immediate needs. I’m sure most people will need money to replace all the galvanized iron “ateps” that went flying like kites.
Arlene and Nicole, let us know what’s going on there and how are the people coping with this situation. Let us know who can handle relief efforts for the people there in Sagunto.
I read that the price of candles, lamps and batteries for flashlights have skyrocketed due to lack of electricity. Fresh vegetables are also more expensive since the delivery trucks from Baguio and Cordi areas are unable to come down the mountains to make delivery because of blocked roads from the mud/landslides. One silver lining, the price of pork and goat meat is down slightly. Sigh. Am praying for everyone’s well being…God Bless.

The Aerial view of the typhoon damage in Pangasinan was being Published in Toronto Star this morning and you can only see the brick walls of houses being devastated. nagrigat shortage la ngaruden ti rice the more manen a tatta ta adu nadadael nga crops isu nga you are right mga Sis Prices of prime commodities will go UP again. So strange that Philippines are experiencing typhoon in the months of July to December but no as early as May.

Dear Paz, Xander, and your Manongs… please preserve your house the best you can. It is so sad that your heritage house be just blown by the wind and forgotten. You may erect a new house, but I will be one of those to suggest and support that your house be preserved as a community heritage house or even become a “museum” (in the future..but live in it of course) as it is a big honor not only for your clan but for the whole barrio as well. I posed with my kids for a picture in front of your house last year because I was telling them of the rich culture our barrio had. One by one, our cultural heritage houses are being torn not only by nature but by progress…and sad that it seems nothing will ever be preserved to tell our younger generations how our olds lived before. I even want to revive the use of bamboo house again for exhibit purposes…and huts during summer…ahhhh, those were the days. Let us put the roof back, and have it fully sealed. Mabuhay ng Pamilya at Bahay Esteban!
