Figure 1 – MAIN GATE

A reminiscence of my Alma Mater
by Kagawad Loejan Anudon, PTCA President

“Amidst the cold rainy days of June to September, she held me in her bosom to give me warmth and comfort. In summer, she sheltered my fragile skin from the blistering heat of the sun. And in fairer days of our first meeting, she let me play with her pet dog, bantay …. all year long.”

According to a record issued by the Court of First Instance of Pangasinan during the Commonwealth period, a ruling bearing Decree No. 712456 was issued on the 21st day of August 1939 that the municipality of Sison, province of Pangasinan, is the owner of a parcel of land situated at barrio Artacho, Sison, Pangasinan (Artacho Barrio School site). It was surveyed on May 21 – 22, 1936.

This record is insufficient to determine the exact date of establishment of the Artacho Elementary School. However, it was indicated in the document that prior to its registration, elementary buildings and improvements already existed. The date of survey is also not an assurance of founding so this author is respectfully appealing to the alumni or friends who might have knowledge regarding the history of the school to narrate some facts for the information of the new legatees and for record purposes.

This endeavor is in connection with the plan of the Parents, Teachers and Community Association (PTCA) of the Artacho Elementary School to host a grand alumni homecoming this coming month of December, 2008. The plan is also in support to Mayor Kimi S. Cojuangco’s invitation to all Sisonians to come home and attend the 2008 Sison Town Fiesta.

Figure 2 – 2 NEW SCHOOL ROOMS FROM GOV. VICTOR AGBAYANI

Through the initiatives Hon. Vinah L. Stephan (new ABC President) of barangay Agat, Hon. Wilmer B. Ulangca of barangay Artacho and this author being the PTCA Fed. President with favorable endorsements of the Punong Barangays (new term for Barangay Captains) of barangay Sagunto and Cauringan and the PTCA of Artacho Elementary School, then governor Victor Agbayani approved the construction of a new two room school building at the southeast corner of the school. It is now currently occupied by grades III and VI.

Again, through the same initiators, a multifunctional sports ground was constructed at the left center of the school premises, funded by the Artacho Elementary School with contributions from the high school department. A project primarily aimed to eliminate the constant above-ankle-deep flooding of the three rooms occupied by grades I, 2A and 2B that did well.

Figure 5 – ON THIS SITE WILL RISE THE NEW 2 ROOM SCHOOL BLDG FROM CONGRESSMAN MARK O. COJUANGCO. It is expected to be completed and ready for occupancy before school enrollment on June 2008. Initiatives of Hon. Vinah L. Stephan, Hon. Wilmer B. Ulangca and this author.

Figure 6 – THE OLD BUILDING …. CONDEMNED AND UNFIT FOR OCCUPANCY. On the leftmost portion (behind the basketball board) used to be the grade I room. It was chipped down to give way for the construction of the new two-room building funded by former governor Victor Agbayani (visible in green and white paints)

She has to go. The municipal engineer inspected the old building and declared it unfit for longer occupancy. The office of the Department of Education and the Department of Public Works and Highways already released its demolition order.

Figure 7 – ANOTHER ANGLE OF THE OLD BUILDING FOR DEMOLITION. The old bell still clings to the same old post.

This author still recalls that during his elementary days, he can hear the bell ring from as far as the distance of NLA turod while gathering cashew and guava fruits.

TWO NEW COMPUTER SETS DONATED BY MAYOR KIMI COJUANGCO

The elementary department has long been surviving without a computer or even a typewriter to facilitate the preparation of needed school documents. Teachers already developed the habit of “nakikisuyo” to friends who have these required office necessities in their homes.

This pathetic situation prompted this author to seek the assistance of Mayor Kimi S. Cojuangco thru then District Councilor, Mina Joy C. Pangasinan, and it was gladly granted. Two new sets of computers are now in the possession of the elementary department. Thank you mayor Kimi!

  1. i am just wondering if the alumni is for those who finished first grade to fourth year of high school…because i attended the school from first grade to sixth grade only…however, it would be nice to be reunited with old classmates of mine…thnx….

That’s another event to organize. Let’s take advantage of the 2008 Homecoming to gather all the concerned alumni of our beloved Artacho School. I spent just four years there, but that short a time was so meaningful for it represents a big part of e now. Hey, that condemned building is a good old memory of the learning foundation many of us have. It’s about time we look at our old classrooms and renovate them (if possible preserve some portions of the building) for they can draw back visitors to the olden past.

I am just curious at the subject of your land investigations. It says in the Sison webpage that Alava and Artacho fused to become Sison around 1918. Between 1907 and 1910 Esperanza town (where sagunto was a part) and Labayug merged to become Artacho town. If Artacho was a town, around 1019 to 1918 where was the site of the Artacho municipal office? Ayan na ngay ti presidencia na? I remember my grandfather Ricardo Castillo (1912-1987) as narrating he studied in NLA where there were Missionary American teachers. Why he did not study in Artacho that time could be the answer to your BIG QUESTION: Was Artacho school already established in 1912? or 1919 when he’s supposed to enter grade one? The school may have been the site for the Artacho municipal office so could have turned into a school with all those buildings and establishments after the merging of Alava and Artacho that became SISON town (municipal office moved to current Sison site in 1918?) I’m curious where Artacho town performed its official activities? Hmmn.

And another thing, looking at that old building, it seems it was renovated around 1970 to 1980. The archi design is typical of circa 1970. The old look was the capiz window frame Spanish inspired. I guess, the old municipal office was the Home Economics building that used to be wooden (dyay addapay sirok na mabalin ka nga agkuraig ti mikel dyay daga) . NIce question you are working on. Keep asking here. Baka rumuar dagidiay kopong2 minds hahaha.

mbcgomez, canada. Hello! My jurisdiction is limited to the elementary department. the high school might have a different agenda.
Alumni also means those people who studied at a certain school regardless if they graduated or not.
The mechanics of the proposed grand alumni homecoming is still under study. Surely, a committee will be formed to handle this affair and it is either any of the local alumni or the current PTCA officials and members who will be chosen to work it out. You will be informed immediately after finalization.
Please be advised that at this moment there is NO APPROVED SOLICITATION OF ANY KIND for this endeavor. But for those who may insist to send or give any kind of assistance, please contact the elementary school principal, Mrs. Jovita Narciza Prieto or this author. ALWAYS demand for a receipt duly signed by the PTCA Treasurer, Mrs. Benedicta Saludo Runas.
    Thank u again mbcgomez, canada

Emz, could it really be that the old Artacho municipyo is where the artacho school is now located and the municipyo buildings left behind when the municipyo transferred to Sison were the old buildings? I will have to research on this. Maybe this is a good start. Thanks!
You could be right, renovation of the old building could have been made in the mid 70′s. I also recall those capiz windows that if u open them, tungkalam pay. but those were really big windows ngem diak metten malagip no kasano nga naikkatda.
Just this morning, Mrs. Estolas (wife of the late Lakay Doro) was here at the office. She gave me some infos regarding the name QUEEN LORETA SIBAYAN visible at the main gate.

  11. This author says:

evz, the grand alumni homecoming could be really a big event that also means more study and plan. Surely, your expertise on this matter will be extremely needed. I already started budging Joy Julaton about the mechanics because a concrete plan must be submitted for finality if possible before the end of this month.

  12. This author says:

This is to inform everyone that two rooms at the left portion of the old building (still visible at figure 6) was already torn down. The other two rooms were temporarily retained for use until end of this school year which will be on the last week of March, 2008. The contractors already delivered some of the materials needed to construct the two new rooms. No confirmation yet but Congressman Mark O. Cojuangco wanted to make it 6 rooms as evidently shown in the project plan. One of the honorable congressman’s project engineers made a positive comment when I asked him about it but also said just the two for the moment. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed.

  13. This author says:

On figure 5, this is the initial location for the two new rooms but the area is too small when surveyed. the more it has become impossible now for the project site because a 6 rooms plan is being brewed.

  14. medz says:

ne ng.evz…nagpardas met dayta smart brain mo a…apay nabasam diay medyo nag-cross nga panunot ko…deep thought laeng met …hehehe

  15. evz says:

Hi Medz saan mo ya ammo nga adda psychic power ko kunkunak lang kadi!ahaha but whatever sis its your decision and If I were you I would prefer to give it to the school since users there are being guided accordingly.
Apo President ti PTCA count on me for whatever plans specially in achieving the goal. Let us help ourselves first before asking assistance from the government.
