Happy Rizal Day, Sagunto!

Jeanette on Dec 30th 2007

Sagunto’s Fiesta has is well underway as we speak probably finished; HAPPY NEW YEAR, SAGUNTO!

Jose Rizal (full name: José Protacio Mercado Rizal Alonso y Realonda) (June 19, 1861 – December 30, 1896) is the National Hero of the Philippines; he died a martyr of the Philippine Revolution on December 30, 1896, and Sagunto is one of of the few barangays that still commemorates this event. Sagunto started the tradition of Mr. & Ms. Rizal Day in 1968 as a way to raise funds for the barangay and it still continues to this day. It is a festive way to end the year and celebrate the coming of the new.

Unearthed from the depths of the ‘baul’ here is your first Rizal Day king and queen. It was a very deep baul, so excuse the graininess of the photo.

These are from last year’s celebration:

HAPPY RIZAL DAY AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE IN SAGUNTO AND HERE IN OUR ABONG! My prayers for everyone is for continued faith and connection with one and all. Let’s continue to foster the friendships and bayanihan spirit we all hold so dear. I pray that our town and barangay may finally see improvements via the leadership of our Barangay Captain Esteban and Council members, our Mayor Kimi and Congressman Mark Cojuangco. I pray that all of us living abroad will continue to support those that are still back home in the Philippines and each other wherever we now reside. Let us all support one another and lift each other’s spirits. It is hard to live away from our loved ones in Pinas but my hope is that through the web, we can still feel connected and in touch. May the New Year bring you peace, joy and happiness!!!!

was that 1968 nette? gosh, we were still in makati that time preparing to move to sagunto and enrol in artacho in 1969. but why do i remember that event? oh yes, we always went home for summer and christmas vacations. i know, that was when the tall fountain fireworks and long fairy wands were first introduced. what if, next year, you become ms. sison? thanks that rizal’s teachings reached the hearts of the youth that many are now spreading goodness to the world. you and elmer have gone this far…in your own ways, you have fulfilled rizal’s wishes. you are models of today’s children. now let’s find more youth to follow the footsteps of their manangs and manongs or create a new impression for the whole world to see. Happy Rizal Day!

Yep sis, Evz, I think everyone in Sagunto is slowly recuperating from all the festivities and fiestas :-) Just from reading the comments section here http://saguntostar.com/?p=4#comment-5259 filed under the 2006 Fiesta, there are some questions as to the donations, etc. Let’s be patient as am sure that the council members at the municipal and barangay level are just getting to the accounting part of the festivities. I know most of you have given donations and want to make sure that amounts given are directed to the proper channels, etc. If it takes the US government to finish most of their accountings of year-end taxes a good two months to complete (that’s with computers and over-time personnel) how much faster (or slower) should we expect for an up-start, small town community with no computers and smaller man-power?

Let’s give those hard-working people a break and let them catch their breath as am sure they’re good on their word…they have to be, right? The people know we pay attention to these things and I’m sure they want to show us the successful donation drive, let’s wait and see. I still think they ALL did a heck of a wonderful job!

Yap Bot I agree and communication is the best thing for the success of any organizations or group talk directly to the people involved they are the right resources to get in touch with hope that they got a lesson from the past experiences now.
