One of the mayor’s initiatives that she mentioned during the meeting with Saguntonians in California last month, was the propagation of Red Lady Papaya as an agricultural crop for Sison.
We learned recently that a seminar on seedling production for Red Lady Papaya and other high value crops was held in Sison last week. The Sison Agriculture office selected representatives from each barangay to be trained as extension-agriculturists. A couple of the representatives from Sagunto were Mr. Rolly Benosa and Mr. Daniel Pascua.
Rolly, who shared this information with the Sagunto Star, said that The Sagunto Vegetable Growers were one of the first to be trained by the seed company on the propagation of the red lady papaya five years ago. The mayor has since contracted with the same seed company to provide the seeds and technology for red lady papayas. Rolly said that “Saguntonians were the first to grow the red lady papaya and cherry tomatoes” so he is enthusiastic that “Sagunto growers should have the edge over the other barangays that still have to undergo training!”
Rolly adds that The Sagunto Vegetable Growers already had plans to grow the red lady papaya as an agri-business ever since they were trained by the seed company but many growers were hampered by the initial investment required. He is hopeful that with the mayor’s initiative, this plan will finally come to fruition.
We will update on the details of this initiative later as we receive more information.
